Construction of Fenway Park began in September 1911 and cost $650,000. Comparatively, American businessmen John Henry and Tom Werner bought the Boston Red Sox in 2002 for $380 million, reflecting how much the economy changed over 91 years.
Since they bought the Red Sox, Henry and Werner have committed significant resources to maintain Fenway Park’s ambiance and improve the ballpark’s quality. The original Opening Day at Fenway Park was postponed three times.
April 17, 1912, marked the originally scheduled Opening Day at Fenway Park. However, MassLive.com reported that what promised to be a fantastic Opening Day celebration was overshadowed by the sinking of the luxury liner Titanic, which took place on April 15, 1912.
In addition, bad weather cast a cloud over the first ballgame at Fenway Park. And even though Opening Day at Fenway Park was scheduled for April 17, rain forced three postponements, and the ballpark did not host its first baseball game until April 20.
Yawkey Way was initially called “Jersey Street.”
Remember “Jersey Street”? Many Red Sox fans probably don’t realize it, but what is now referred to as “Yawkey Way,” aka the street leading up to Fenway Park, was initially called Jersey Street.
In 1977, Jersey Street was renamed Yawkey Way to honor late Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, who had passed away a year earlier. And today, Yawkey Way remains a popular destination for casual and hardcore Red Sox fans throughout the baseball season.
