Tours of Boston – Often called the “cradle of America,” Boston is filled with history that fascinates and educates. We often think we know everything we need, especially if we paid close attention in history class. The truth is there’s more history to Boston than could ever fill a book, and much of that history falls strictly in the “strange or bizarre” category. After all, this is a city where several were killed in a molasses flood—a city that claims the world’s second-skinniest house. The next time you’re in our fair city, consider taking tours of Boston history to see some of these amazing sights and then brag to your friends and family about your new knowledge of the city.

Tours of Boston

1. Emerald Necklace

Located throughout the city and in some of the finest Boston neighborhoods, there is a series of parks that equal 1,100 acres. That’s half the total park area in the city of Boston, right here in this one chain of green. Some of the parks included in the necklace might be familiar, such as Boston Common and the Public Garden. The project to connect this series of parks was devised by Frederick Law Olmsted, after whom another park in the chain is named.

You can start your tour of the Emerald Necklace near Downtown Crossing, into Brookline, curving through Jamaica Plain, and finishing in Dorchester and Roxbury. You can choose one of the many, such as the Arnold Arboretum, which is managed by Harvard University, or the Jamaica Pond, with its rowboats and picturesque picnic spots. In fact, you could spend days just exploring the beauty and green of Boston.

2. Black Heritage Trail

Starting at the Museum of African American History, this trail follows a path not often discussed in history books. Though the first black residents of Boston arrived as slaves, many were free by the end of the Revolutionary War. These and others throughout the country made strides that changed the course of our history.

During the tour, you may see some spots from the history books, but many may be completely unknown to you. On the list are the George Middleton House, the oldest home in Beacon Hill built by African Americans. George Middleton was a hero of the Revolutionary War, the leader of an all-black company called the “Bucks of America.” Also on the list is the Lewis and Harriet Hayden House. Lewis Hayden had the distinction of escaping through the Underground Railroad from Lexington. He and his wife then became leaders in the abolitionist movement. All of the stops on the trail are worth seeing.

3. Coolidge Corner Theatre

Though first built as a church, the Coolidge Corner Theatre has been strictly an art house cinema since the early 1930s. Simply stepping inside the building sends you back in time to a different era. You’ll get the benefit of the late 1800s architecture with the atmosphere of the Golden Age of film.

In addition to foreign and art films, you can also enjoy some current blockbusters. Simply visit the website if you want to know what’s playing. You’ll find various categories with myriad films—surely something to please everyone. As you view, you’ll sit among the sumptuous velvet and gold draperies that hearken back to earlier days. Every moment is an experience in itself.

4. The Liberty Hotel

In a slightly ironic twist, the iconic Liberty Hotel was actually once a jail. The Charles Street Jail, located in Beacon Hill, once housed Malcolm X, among other notorious Boston personalities. The building has since been completely refurbished to offer luxury and fun, but there’s no denying the original use of the building when you see the layout. Cells-turned-rooms line balconies that overlook the former prison floor, and many of the locations inside, such as restaurants, bars, and shops, are connected by a collection of catwalks.

Whether you stay at the Liberty Hotel during your time in Boston or not, the building is definitely worth a visit. In fact, all of the spots on this list could show you a Boston you never imagined.
